SKELTON - IN - CLEVELAND
IN HISTORY

CHURCH RATES,
How the Money was gathered in.

Each Parishioner was compelled to pay a Church Rate which was calculated according to the property in which they lived and the area of land.
These payments were set by a "Terrier", which is a description in words of the local map.
In these times many people needed land, as they often kept a cow, pigs and hens in order to survive.
See Skelton possessions here.
Even more so after the Enclosure Acts of the early 1800s placed into private hands village areas that had long been used for common pasture.

CHURCH RENTS.
The Parish Church had acquired Land over time as bequests. The Rents were added to the Church Rate income, rather than going to the Vicar or the Church authorities.
In addition, in Skelton an annual bequest of 10 shillings called "Ling's Dole", to prepare the Church for Christmas, supplemented the income.
