The Skelton Parish Registers 1657 to 1875.

The above Registers were transcribed and indexed by Dorothy "Dot" Harris.
In 1984, after discussions with Skelton Church and Middlesbrough Archives, she volunteered to do this work and also to record the Memorial Inscriptions in the Skelton Old Churchyard.
The previous year, whilst working as a cataloguer with The Cleveland Heritage Project, she had transcribed the early Hinderwell Parish Registers and helped on the Memorial Inscription recording for both Hinderwell and Brotton Churchyards.
The Skelton transcripts were taken from the original Registers, which were then held at the Church in the High Street, but are now deposited with Teesside Archives, Middlesbrough.
The Registers were copied by hand into notebooks and then typed out using an old fashioned typewriter.
This was followed by the longest and trickiest job of all, creating an index of names, which without a computer, entailed making innumerable slips, which were then collated and typed into alphabetical lists.
Dot also made an index of the names in the first 3 registers, which had been transcribed by the Rev Hawell in 1890. [see previous page]
Several days were spent deciphering worn inscriptions on headstones in Skelton Old Church yard and recording them into notebooks for typing and indexing.

The finished Register and Memorial Inscription Transcripts and Indexes were deposited at Teesside Archives, but Dot kept a copy of her typed work, along with some of her original notebooks.
She is willing to do "look-ups" for people doing research work in either Skelton or Hinderwell.

Dot is a native of Saltburn, N Yorks and a qualified teacher. She was one of the first intake of students at Middlesbrough Teacher Training College.
Her first job was at St Peter's Brotton. She then owned and ran the Bobby Shaftoe Nursery School at Saltburn. This was followed by a period as a researcher and several years teaching in Middlesbrough.
In 1992 she went to live in New Zealand, where she continued with some genealogy research and also taught in a rural school. She returned to the UK in 2011.
Her maternal Great Grandparents, Richard Thorpe and Emma Leeks were married in 1883 at Skelton Old Church.
They had several children and lived most of their lives in the village. Their daughter, Emma Eliza was Dot's Grandmother.

Richard Thorpe, who is commemorated on the Skelton War Memorial, having died as a prisoner-of-war on the 18th June 1918, was their son and brother to Dot's Gran.
Emma Leek's father John Leeks is buried in the new cemetery at Skelton. The Leeks family were in Skelton by 1881 and had come from Great Bradley in Suffolk.
Margaret Long of Maryland, USA, who has contributed many items to this website, informs me that the Mormon Library have microfilm of the Skelton Parish Registers, which they hire out to family researchers over there for a fee.
When this filming was carried out is not presently known. They also have film of the Skelton Church of England Bishops transcripts for 1600-1874 and the Memorial Inscriptions in Skelton Old Churchyard.
