Harold Smith

His parents received notification that he was "missing" and knew no more for a long time.
He must have been killed early on in the swift German advance across Northern France, as Athies, where Harold is buried, lies 12 kilometres to the East of Arras.
Company Sgt Major Robert Shaw of Skelton Green lost his life at the same time and is buried in the same cemetery. Many local lads of the 4th Yorks Battalion were killed in the same area in the First World War in the Spring of 1917.
Athies Extension is mainly a First World War Cemetery with 312 burials.
It also contains 41 Second World War burials, ten of them unidentified, mostly dating from May 1940.
