"WE WILL REMEMBER THEM"

4386726 Warrant Officer Class II ROBERT SHAW.

4th Bn., Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment).

who died, aged 28, between 21st and 24th May 1940.

Son of Walter and Elizabeth Shaw; husband of Ethel Shaw, of Skelton in Cleveland, N Yorkshire.

Athies Communal Cemetery Extension.

Robert's family received "missing" reports long after he had been killed, as in the confusion of the retreat to Dunkirk, no one knew exactly what had happened.
He must have lost his life, though, early in the German advance across France, as Athies, where he is buried, is some 12 kilometres to the East of Arras,
the same area where many of our local 4th Yorks Battalion lads were killed in the First War in the Spring of 1917.

Athies Extension is a First World War Cemetery with 312 burials.
It also contains 41 Second World War burials, ten of them unidentified, mostly dating from May 1940.
