Killed in action on the 15th July 1916, aged 20.

Enlisted at Saltburn by Sea, N Yorks.

Son of Joseph and Annie E Scuffham, of 50 Harker St, Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorks.

FAMILY:-
1901. Joseph, aged 5, was living at 50 Harker St, Skelton Green, N Yorks where he had been born.
His father, Joseph, aged 50, was an Ironstone miner below ground. He had been born in Boston, Lincolnshire.
His mother, Annie E, aged 44, was born in Whitby, N Yorks. By 1911 she has had 12 children and all are still living.
They had another seven children apart from Joe:-
Elizabeth, age 24, born in Brotton;
And seven more born in Skelton:- William 19,[Ironstone miner]. Beatrice 14, Francis S 12, Natheline, 9, Annie E S, 7 and Agatha S 3.

1911. The family are still at 50 Harker Street. 6 of the children are still at home. Francis has started work in the Ironstone mines, but Joseph, now aged 15 not yet working. Another daughter has arrived, Imo aged 9.

WAR SITUATION.
The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment were part of the 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.
At the time of Joseph's death the Battalion were defending the Trenches at Kemmel.
His Battalion number suggests that he had not been long in France and he was not awarded the 1914/15 Star.
The War Diary for the 15th July says 2 other ranks killed and 5 wounded by Trench Mortars.

Kemmel Military Chateau Cemetery is located 8 kilometres South of Ypres and contains 1,135 burials.
