2640 Lance Corporal HERBERT JACKSON.
4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed in action, aged 21, on the 17th September 1916.
Born and enlisted at Skelton in Cleveland.
Son of John Jackson, of 20 Park St, Skelton-in-Cleveland, N Yorks.

FAMILY:-
1901. Herbert, aged 6, was living at 20 Park St and had been born in Skelton.
His father, John, age 41, was a Back bye Deputy in the Ironstone Mines and had been born in Guisborough, N Yorks.
His mother, Sarah A, age 34 had also been born in Guisborough. She had had 5 children by 1911 and 4 were still living.
He had a brother, Arthur 13 and 2 sisters, Ethel 15 and Kate 11.
1911. The family are still at 20 Park St. Herbert now 16 is an Apprentice to a Joiner. Arthur is a Blacksmith, above ground, at the Mines and Kate is a Housekeeper. Ethel appears to have left home.
It seems that his mother had died before the family received the terrible news of Herbert's death.

WAR SITUATION:-
The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment were part of the 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.
Herbert's Medal Card shows that he was an early Volunteer for service in the War. He went out to France when the 4th Yorks first went on the 18th April 1915.
Unless he was out wounded at some time, he must have fought with the Battalion through their trials at Ypres in the Winter of 1915/16 and then at Kemmel before it was ordered South to the Somme.
At the time of Herbert's death the Battalion had been ordered to attack the German trenches to the NE of Martinpuich in the Battle of Flers Courcelettes, a stage in the continuing Battle of the Somme that had started on July 1st.
Many Battalion men were killed and wounded. Many bodies never recovered.

MEMORIAL:-
Herbert is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial which bears the names of more than 72,000 UK and Commonwealth men, who have no known grave.
