Died, age 19, on the 4th July 1917.

Grandson of Sarah Elizabeth Hanson and the late John W Hanson of 11 Vaughan St, North Skelton, N Yorkshire.

Husband of Emily Hanson of Darlington Tce, Staithes, North Yorkshire.

FAMILY:-
1901. Frank, age 3, and his brother John B, age 6, are living at 11 Vaughan St, North Skelton with their Grandparents.
His Grandfather, John, age, 52, is an Ironstone Rigger and had been born at Ruswarp, N Yorks.
His Grandmother, Sarah, age 55, was born in Lealholm, N Yorks. She had had 9 children and 6 were living in 1911.
Details of Frank's parents not traced.

1911. Sarah is now a widow with only one son and a boarder living at 11 Vaughan St, N Skelton.
Frank's address at this time not traced.
WAR SITUATION:- The Germans were trying to starve Britain into submission with a submarine blockade.
Francis Hanson served with the Mercantile Marine as a steward aboard the S S Goathland (Whitby).
The ship was sailing from St Nazaire to the Gulf on the 4th July 1917, when it was sunk by a German U-boat 30 miles South West of St Nazaire.
MEMORIAL:-
3,305 merchant ships were lost in the First World War and the Tower Hill Memorial, London commemorates almost 12,000 Mercantile Marine casualties who have no grave but the sea.
