10th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed in action on the 29th October 1916.
Enlisted at Skelton in Cleveland.
Son of Robert and Esther Cook of 34 Charlotte St, New Skelton, late of Hutton-le-Hole. N Yorks.

FAMILY:-
1911. The Cook family are living at 26 William Street, New Skelton, N Yorks.
Edward [Ted] is age 19 and working below ground in the Ironstone Mines as a Platelayer.
His Father, Robert, age 51, is an Ironstone Miner and was born at Lastingham, N Yorks.
His mother, Esther, age 52, was born in Hutton le Hole. She has had 10 children and one has died.
Ted has 2 brothers still living at home, Robert, age 22, a Warehouseman and William, age 17, a Tailor's Apprentice.
And a Sister, Esther Maude, age 22.

WAR SITUATION:-
The 10th (Service) Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment were formed at Richmond on the 30th September 1914.
They were attached to the 62nd Brigade of the 21st Division.
Ted's Medal Card shows that was not awarded the 1914/15 Star.
The date in 1916 when he joined the 10th Battalion in France is not therefore given.
In 1916 the 21st Division fought in the Battles of the Somme and it is likely Ted fought through much of this.
The Battle of Albert in July, the Battle of Bazentin Ridge and Flers-Courcelette in September.
The 10th Yorks Battalion were defending trenches that had been captured near Gordon Alley, NE of Martinpuich, when Edward was killed on 29th October 1916.
MEMORIAL
Vermelles is a village, 10 kilometres to the North West of Lens. The British Cemetery there has 2,134 burials.
