Killed in action on the 15th September 1916.
Born Halton, N Yorks. Enlisted at Stokesley.
Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Coates of Skelton in Cleveland.

FAMILY:-
1911. Stanley is living in Skelton. No address given. He is age 15 and working as a Grocer's Errand Boy.
He had been born at Halton, Yorks.
His Father, Thomas, aged 32, is a Woodman, Private Estate, presumably Skelton Castle.
He was born in Coneythorpe, Yorks.
His mother Mary Jane, age 32, was born in Catton, Yorks. She has had 2 children, both still living.
Stanley's brother Ernest is aged 5 and born in Flaxton, Yorks.

WAR SITUATION:-
The 4th Yorks Battalion were part of 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.
Stanley was not awarded the 1914/15 Star and the date in 1916 when he joined the Battalion in France is not known.
He was killed in action in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, which commenced on the 15th September, the day of his death, and lasted until it was called off on the 22nd of that month.

MEMORIAL:-
Stanley has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, which bears over 72,000 names of Commonwealth soldiers.
