4454 Private ARTHUR HENRY RISING.
4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
Born in Norwich. Enlisted at Guisborough, N Yorks.
Died of wounds, aged 22, on the 18th June 1916.
Son of William George and Alice Maria Rising, of 14 Manless Green Terrace, Skelton-in Cleveland, N Yorks.

FAMILY:-
1901. Arthur, aged 7, was living at 66 Harker St, Skelton Green, N Yorks. He had been born in Norwich.
His father, William George, age 43, worked in the Ironstone Mines as a Labourer. He had been born in Norwich, Norfolk.
His mother, Alice Maria, age 38, had been born in Nayland, Suffolk. By 1911 she had had 8 children and 5 were still living.
His elder brother George, age 12, was already working as a painter's apprentice.
He also had a brother Ernest, age 9, and a sister Edith 4.
1911. The family are living at 59 High St, Skelton. Arthur and Ernest are working as a Gardeners.
Brother William is in the Ironstone Mines and sister Edith Emma is a Domestic Servant.
By the end of the War the family had moved again to 14 Manless Tce, Skelton Green.
Ernest Rising enlisted in 1914 in the 4th Reserve Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, Army No 2937.

WAR SITUATION:-
The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment were part of the 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.
Arthur's Medal card shows that he was not awarded the 1914/15 Star and must have joined the 4th Yorks in France in 1916.
The Battalion at the time of Arthur's death in June 1916 were defending the trenches at Kemmel and on the 18th the War Diary states that they were heavily shelled and 2 killed and 7 wounded.
Arthur must have been one of the wounded in this incident and taken back to the Hospital at Bailleul, where he died.

MEMORIAL:-
Bailleul, which lies about 15 kilometres to the South West of Ypres was an important British Army depot and hospital centre. Apart from April to August in 1918 it was always in British possession. The Communal Cemetery Extension has over 4,000 burials.
